Lameness & Diagnostic Services

Identifying the problem accurately is the foundation of every treatment plan. We combine hands-on evaluation with technology-driven diagnostics to give you answers — not guesses.

Lameness Evaluation

Lameness is one of the most common reasons horses are pulled from training or competition. Dr. Alvarez performs systematic, hands-on lameness evaluations — including flexion tests, hoof testers, nerve blocks, and SLEIP gait analysis — to identify the source of pain or dysfunction. Early diagnosis protects your horse's long-term soundness and competition career. Learn about lameness evaluation →

SLEIP Gait Analysis

SLEIP is a sensor-based gait analysis platform that quantifies asymmetry in your horse's movement with precision impossible to achieve with the naked eye. Sensors placed on the poll, withers, and pelvis map how your horse loads and unloads each limb at trot and canter. The result is an objective baseline — invaluable for tracking recovery, monitoring training load, and building a case for pre-purchase decisions. Learn about SLEIP →

Diagnostic Imaging

Lone Star Equine Sports Medicine is equipped with digital radiography (X-ray), musculoskeletal ultrasound, and video endoscopy. Digital X-rays provide immediate, high-resolution images of bone structure for diagnosing fractures, degenerative joint disease, navicular changes, and more. Ultrasound evaluates soft-tissue injuries — tendons, ligaments, and joint capsules — while endoscopy visualizes the upper airway for horses with performance-limiting respiratory issues.

Regenerative & Joint Therapies

These biologic treatments use your horse's own biology — or cutting-edge materials — to restore function rather than simply managing symptoms. Most are performed during a single clinic visit or farm call.

PRP Therapy (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

PRP therapy uses a concentration of your horse's own platelets — drawn, processed, and reinjected in a single visit — to accelerate healing in tendons, ligaments, and joints. Growth factors in the plasma signal the body to repair damaged tissue faster and more completely than rest alone. PRP is commonly used for tendonitis, suspensory injuries, and joint inflammation in sport horses.

Pro-Stride APS

Pro-Stride is an Autologous Protein Solution that concentrates the horse's own anti-inflammatory proteins from whole blood. A single Pro-Stride injection into an arthritic joint delivers concentrated IL-1Ra and other cytokine inhibitors directly to the site of inflammation — providing durable relief that can last six months to a year without the side effects of repeat steroid injections. Ideal for horses with OA of the stifle, fetlock, or coffin joint.

RenoVō® Amniotic Tissue Therapy

RenoVō® uses processed equine amniotic membrane and fluid as a biologic scaffold to support healing of tendon and ligament injuries. Amniotic tissue is rich in growth factors, cytokines, and hyaluronic acid that modulate inflammation and promote regeneration of organized collagen — reducing scar tissue formation and improving the structural integrity of the repaired tissue. Arthramid® Polyacrylamide Hydrogel

ArthramidVet® is an innovative intra-articular treatment for joint pain and synovitis. Unlike corticosteroids that mask symptoms, Arthramid integrates with the synovial membrane to restore the joint's natural viscosity and cushioning. A single injection provides long-lasting structural support, reducing lameness scores and protecting cartilage. Learn more →

Additional Services

From preventive care to advanced rehabilitation, our team provides a full spectrum of equine veterinary services — at the clinic in Montgomery or via farm call throughout the greater Houston area.

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy delivers focused acoustic energy pulses deep into tissue to stimulate cellular repair, increase local blood flow, and desensitize pain receptors. It is highly effective for suspensory desmitis, proximal sesamoid injuries, navicular syndrome, and back pain. Treatments are performed standing with light sedation and typically require 3 sessions spaced 2–3 weeks apart.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves the intradermal injection of a therapeutic solution along the spine or neck to interrupt pain signals at the level of the dermatome. It is most effective for horses with back soreness, cervical vertebral stiffness, and early degenerative changes. Many horses show improved willingness to work and reduced girthiness within 2–3 weeks of treatment.

Pre-Purchase Examinations

A pre-purchase exam is your most important tool before buying a horse. Dr. Alvarez performs a comprehensive evaluation including hands-on physical exam, flexion tests, digital radiographs of key joints, and SLEIP gait analysis to give you an objective picture of the horse's current health and soundness. Written findings are provided. Learn about pre-purchase exams →

Equine Dentistry

Regular dental care is essential for proper bit contact, comfortable eating, and overall health in performance horses. Dr. Alvarez and staff perform full oral exams, power floating, and identification of sharp points, wave mouth, hooks, ramps, and wolf teeth. Annual or semi-annual dental care is recommended for horses in active work.
